about traditional oriental medicine and acupuncture

  • WHAT IS TRADITIONAL ORIENTAL MEDICINE?

Traditional oriental medicine is a powerful, safe, and drug free system of medicine recognized by the World Health Organisation for its effectiveness in over 100 health complaints.

The Oriental medicine therapist moves beyond simply treating symptoms, by identifying the underlying causes of your ailments and balancing your system as a whole. This is done using techniques such as Chinese and/or Japanese acupuncture.

  • WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM TRADITIONAL ORIENTAL MEDICINE AND ACUPUNCTURE WITH ANNE?

Acupuncture is suitable for most adults and is contraindication only in a small number of cases. (For example, it is unsuitable for individuals with bleeding disorders such as haemophilia.)

Non-invasive Traditional Oriental Medicine treatment is also currently available with Anne, for children over the age of 7 accompanied by a guardian and for adults who are needle-phobic.

In this case, treatment is in the form of Japanese and Chinese acupressure, Tui-na massage, cupping, moxibustion, and dietary and lifestyle homecare advice (and excludes acupuncture).

  • WHAT HAPPENS IN A TREATMENT SESSION?

Anne first carries out an in-depth traditional medicine consultation to identify the underlying causes, plus presenting pattern of the condition in the patient, (all information taken is kept in total confidentiality).

She then utilises Chinese and/or Japanese acupuncture treatments to resolve the ailment.

In addition, adjunct therapies, such as moxibustion (holding a smoking warm stick of compacted herbs close to the body) or cupping (Using the vacuum created within glass cups to create therapeutic suction to painful or numb areas of the body) are often used.

Central to Anne’s treatment philosophy is providing patients with traditional oriental medicine dietary and lifestyle homecare advice. Patients can then minimise the influence of the root cause of their condition and therefore also receive the most comprehensive treatment possible.

The actual technique of acupuncture involves the insertion of single use, disposable fine needles to the acupuncture points on the body. Anne uses only the very best quality needles currently available on the market for patient comfort and all needles are single use, pre-sterilised and disposable.

A first visit with Anne is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes, and subsequent visits, approximately 1 hour, (for Chinese and Japanese acupuncture) and 1-1½ hours (for an exclusively Japanese acupuncture session).

  • HOW DOES JAPANESE ACUPUNCTURE DIFFER FROM CHINESE ACUPUNCTURE?

K.M. style Japanese acupuncture is a world-renowned style of acupuncture that has been chosen by Harvard Medical School for its doctors to study and use to treat patients.

Unlike Chinese acupuncture, Japanese acupuncture can uniquely allow patients to instantly verify changes to their body’s energy and their symptoms during the actual acupuncture session.

Using Kiiko Matsumoto (K.M.) style Japanese acupuncture, Anne employs a systematic palpatory sequence that both establishes a diagnosis and suggests treatment options. Palpation is the ability to gain information through touch and a significant aspect of K.M. style Japanese acupuncture is the use of this method.

K.M. style Japanese acupuncture addresses the client’s complaint from several levels. By examining the constitutional and structural imbalances, which typically underlie patient symptoms, the practitioner can assist in bringing about a more effective and lasting solution to the presenting issue.

It is also therefore especially helpful in providing solutions in the more complex and difficult cases.

In practice, a session of Japanese acupuncture involves distinguishing areas of active sensitivity, on the abdomen and other muscle structures, and with the co-operation of the patient, identifying and subsequently needling the correct relieving set of acupuncture points.

With this procedure, both the patient and practitioner can monitor the progress of the treatment straight away.

Furthermore, this method of immediate feedback from the cross checking method, allows the practitioner and patient immediately bring about verifiable change in the body’s energy and help quickly restore wellness.

Finally, another interesting feature of K.M. style Japanese Acupuncture is that it employs only the best quality needles available on the market, (coated ultra fine Japanese ‘Pain Free’ needles).

This is especially helpful for those with pain conditions and for individuals who are needle phobic.
