About Anne Hughes

Anne Hughes M.A (hons.), Dip Ac. (hons.)

I graduated from a 1600-hour acupuncture programme at the SSC Acupuncture Institute, a leading acupuncture institute in Toronto, Canada, (Irish acupuncture programmes range from courses of 3 weekends duration, to a maximum of 900 hours).

Because of that, my primary training is in both Japanese and Chinese acupuncture, and I'm one of the  few practitioners in Ireland using the powerful blend of both modalities right now.

I've also had the opportunity to study other great oriental medicine modalities in Canada, such as Medical Qi Gong, Auricular Acupuncture (ear acupuncture), Tui Na (Chinese) Massage, and Shiatsu.

Holistic medicine in general is a lifelong interest and over the last 10 years I've taken evening courses in areas like Herbal Medicine, Colour therapy and Aromatherapy. I've also travelled to India and  took a fascinating course in Ayurveda, (the Indian system of traditional medicine).

My goal overall is to be involved in lifelong training to further my knowledge as a holistic practitioner and also to ensure the best possible treatment outcome for my patients.

Right now this involves studying to become a naturopath, with a specialisation in herbal medicine.

In my practice I offer treatment for a wide range of health issues including :

* musculoskeletal, (sports injuries, arthritis, back pain, knee pain etc.)

* emotional/psychological, (stress, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, insomnia etc.),

* gastrointestinal (constipation, ulcers, nausea, diarrhoea etc.),

* neurological (sciatica, headaches, general neuralgias etc.), and

* addictions (alcohol, smoking, food, drugs, gambling etc.)

Overall I run a general practice to enable acupuncture to be available to everyone and to continuously enrich my understanding of Oriental Medicine.

But in addition to my general practice, I specialise in helping people eradicate acute and chronic pain, (Japanese & Chinese  acupuncture used together is highly effective for pain relief).

I've also had a lot of success with psychological/emotional issues and I have  a real interest in helping people with issues such as anxiety, fearfulness and depression since studying  Psychology for my B.A (hons).

Helping clients step out of the cycle of addiction using holistic therapies is also an area I'm fortunate enough to be able to  specialise in, (since I completed my M.A (hons) in Addiction Studies prior to becoming an acupuncturist).

For those who are a little needle phobic I offer treatment via acupressure and an effective variety of other non-invasive Oriental medicine techniques.

Regarding professional status, I'm a registered member of the T.C.M.C.I, and my acupuncture treatments are approved and reimbursable with healthcare insurance providers.
